Performance: Chelsea Knight and Elise Rasmussen’s I Am Not a Man, Not Now

Thursday, July 5, 2012

7–7 pm

Beaux-Arts Court, 3rd Floor

In I Am Not a Man, Not Now, Chelsea Knight and Elise Rasmussen present scenes from Sophocles’ Antigone that reference the roles of women in ancient Greece, roles of subjugation that are still recognizable in the modern world. In this story of a woman committing an act of civil disobedience against the state, social roles and prejudices are explored through concepts such as fate and the will of the gods. Scenes from a contemporary translation of the play, by Robert Fagles, will be performed by David Margulies, and scenes from older translations will be enacted by three Antigones (Claire Fleury, Corey Tazmania, and Kioka Williams). Knight and Rasmussen aim to explore Antigone as both a proto-feminist and a misogynist play, comparing the texts to show the subjective nature of translations over time. Program is free with Museum admission.
