Curatorial Remarks:

Ad Reinhardt said of his flat, geometric abstract paintings: "The content is not in a subject matter or story but in the actual painting activity." Although Reinhardt was a contemporary of the Abstract Expressionists, his art differs greatly from that of Jackson Pollock or Willem de Kooning, whose works are composed of random, gestural brushstrokes. Rather, in paintings like Untitled (Composition #704), Reinhardt's control over his canvas is revealed in solid bricklike blocks of color. The work is strictly composed to deny depth and affirm symmetry.
