Curatorial Remarks:
“I think a view from my window would make an interesting composition,” Grace Hartigan wrote the year she painted
East Side Sunday. At the time, Hartigan was living and working on the Lower East Side, a colorful neighborhood filled with tiny shops huddled among fruit stands, pickle and herring vendors, antique storefronts, and bakeries. The energetic brushstrokes, vibrant bursts of color, and stirring shapes in this painting render the artist’s observations with an imaginative and fragmented sense of movement.
