Curatorial Remarks: Although Eastman Johnson regularly depicted his daughter, Ethel, at play, this portrait’s relatively large scale and loose application of paint was a departure from earlier work. By the late 1870s, Johnson was a well-established painter and deliberately altered his style to keep pace with a new generation of Munich-trained Realist painters known for their bravura brushwork, including William Merritt Chase.
