This depiction of a woman's head framed against a window is an example of Alfred Henry Maurer's late style--a striking, abstract mixture of linear and painterly elements. Late in his career, in poor health and emotionally drained because of negative reviews of his work, Maurer returned to this subject frequently, as if trying to solve the persistent aesthetic problem in his art: the balance between figuration and abstraction.
