The Great Depression imposed severe emotional and financial hardships on many people, including Hartley, who in 1935 was living on sixty cents a day. Relief came when a patron sent the exhausted painter to Bermuda, where the tropical atmosphere revived his flagging spirits. There he concentrated on fish and floral still-life subjects
