One side: two female allegorical figures shaking hands over ceremonial flame, left figure (The Netherlands) wears plumed helmet and is placing liberty cap atop pole on head of other figure (America), at right, who holds shield and sword and steps on lion (symbol of Britain); ring of text around edge, "MEDAL STRUCK BY THE UNITED PROVINCES OF THE NETHERLANDS 1782 IN HONOR OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE"; text within this ring, "LIBERA / SOROR." and at bottom, "SOLEMNI DECR. AGN. / 19 APR. MDCCLXXXII." Other side: fallen unicorn with broken horn in rocky landscape, ring of text around edge, "PRESENTED BY THE HOLLAND SOCIETY OF NEW YORK JANUARY 1901"; text at bottom, "SUB GALLIAE / AUSPICIIS"
