Catalogue Description: Silverplate tureen (a) and cover (b). Large, ovoid, lidded form, raised on four feet, with two large opposed handles. Body (a): Ovoid form with high broad shoulder, tapers to narrower base. Surmounted by thin molded band of opposed diagonal anthemia, surmounted by bifurcated flaring rim. Central motif on body is asymmetrical, incised decoration in the Japanese taste; broad chevron shape at center with incised zigzag and waving lines. On proper left, trifurcated spray of flowers and ribbons. On proper right, stylized quarter floral roundel and large trifurcated leafy spray and ribbon. Motifs repeated on reverse side. Central portion polished, remainder patinated. Handles are applied and opposed, round, scroll-like, large anthemion attached to lower body, attached to upper body by bifurcated tendrils. Legs are raised on four long flared tapered feet terminating in stylized paw feet. Each leg decorated with shell-like flower superimposed by diagonal band. Cover (b): Lid is inward and upward slanting top with large central ovoid dome, undecorated, polished, surmounted by large finial with stepped base that supports horizontal rod-like member surmounted by abstracted anthemion shape with incised symmetrical leaf design, surmounted by small sphere. CONDITION: Good, somewhat tarnished.
