Catalogue Description: Figure of the Hindu god Shiva seated in a posture of ease, with one leg pendant and the other crossed over it. The four-armed god has long, flowing hair and is surrounded by bearded male figures and his gull, Nandi, who appear in diminutive form around the base. His pendant foot rests on the back of a prone figure. Shiva is depicted in the form of Jnana Dakshinamurti. In this form, found mostly in southern Indian art and practice, he serves as a teacher or guru.
