Catalogue Description:
Female figure in bronze on a carved wood base. Figure stands straight with one hand pendant and the other raised to her waist, apparently holding the end of her sarong or other wrap. She is crowned. It is likely that this is a small variant of the type of bronze figure -- usually appearing in pairs -- that appears to have represented departed ancestors in Balinese rituals. Little is known about this ancestral practice, but larger, more elaborate examples can be found in museums and temple collections. Bronze sculpture is extremely rare in Bali, mostly limited to these standing figures.
