Catalogue Description:
Watercolor painting of one of the polychrome murals decorating a ceremonial altar at the temple complex of Tizatlan. The painting in red, turquoise, tan, brown, black and beige features human skulls, hearts, and plant and mountain glyphs among other Mixtec codex-style images. Tizatlan was one of several independent polities that constituted the late pre-Hispanic confederacy of Tlaxcala (1150-1521 C.E.) in central Mexico. Condition: Good; two small losses and a small tear at the top; evidence of paper repair; a few puncture holes along the ends, which have been reinforced with tape.
