Catalogue Description:
Cup (a) porcelain. Short, plain foot rim supports simple flaring bowl of gentle S-curve profile; no handle. Exterior of bowl hand painted with view of crucifixion in landscape on one side and symbols of the passion; gilt border with pendant trefoils, outlined in red, on interior. Saucer (b) porcelain. Circular, dished saucer with gilt border with pendant trifoils, outlined in red surrounding hand painted view of the crucifixion in a landscape. CONDITION - Cup and saucer: wear to decoration. Several examples of overglaze-enamel crucifixion scenes on tea cups have been described as Dutch decorations added to Chinese-made blanks. This may be another example, but futher research needs to be done on the Brooklyn object to determine where it was decorated.
