Baluster Panel, One of Set

Brooklyn Museum photograph
Object Label
The rich, dense application of stylized leaves and berries in a symmetrical arrangement seen in this balustrade is typical of the Prairie School style. Sullivan's interest in nature extends to the treatment of the surface. Even though this was an interior balustrade, the cast iron has been made to simulate the results of exposure to the elements. A layer of matte green paint has been applied over a coat of glossy dark-red paint to achieve a weathered look.
