In early porcelains the whiteness of the clay body shows through a clear glaze. The Ding ware Dish demonstrates the evolution of porcelaneous stonewares and porcelains prior to the Song Dynasty (960–1279). Xing ware from Hebei Province in the north may be considered the first true porcelain. Literary records show the high value of Xing ceramics as tribute wares to the Song court. The Dish with its scalloped rim is an example of porcelains produced at the Ding ware kilns, also in north China.
