Study No. 1 for "Ballerina"
Chaim Gross
American Art
Drawing played an integral preparatory role in the modernist sculpture of Chaim Gross, who used it to capture the poses of live models and to conceptualize his ideas for a work. This sheet served as a study for Ballerina (see illustration), featuring one of his favorite subjects—a female dancer or other performer. The drawing’s energetic hatch marks and looping scribbles anticipate the rough-hewn surface textures of the carved sculpture.
