The vibrant sketchiness of this landscape, in which sharp, bright highlights accent broadly toned areas, demonstrates how completely Samuel Colman had abandoned the Hudson River School landscape aesthetic (known for its careful attention to detail and finish) by the 1880s. An avid traveler and an equally dedicated practitioner of the portable medium of watercolor, Colman had a particular taste for the muted tones of the arid landscapes of California and Mexico, which he visited repeatedly in the eighties and nineties.
