On the Heights
Charles Courtney Curran
American Art
On View: American Art Galleries, 5th Floor, Witness
Many of the paintings, such as this one, that Charles Courtney Curran completed during his summers at the Cragsmoor art colony near Ellenville, New York, reflect the genteel, idyllic nature of the community, and show figures set within the picturesque landscape of the area. Here, three idealized young women are silhouetted against a sunlit sky as they perch on a boulder. Curran’s treatment of bright summer skies, which often took up the greatest portion of his compositions, became a hallmark of his paintings from Cragsmoor.

This artist's style was influenced by impressionism, especially when he uses loose brushwork to capture the effects of light and shade in this outdoor scene.
He painted these three women seated on a boulder in the countryside of upstate New York.
