Hovering from a clothes hanger, the chest binder in this image carries an almost bodily presence, with rips, stains, and fraying edges that index its long history of use. By displaying it prominently in this photograph, Elle Pérez inverts the commonly concealed nature of the undergarment and the sometimes-private acts of identity formation that it suggests. Pérez holds space for these quiet moments of becoming, chronicling the intimate undercurrents and ordinary minutiae of genderfluid and trans experiences.
