Antafi

Object Label
Antafi is a handmade slab-built terracotta. Thin walls contrast with what the artist describes as a “robust form,” playing with the idea of fragility. The swirls of the white, pink, and red glaze evoke woodgrain. Such textures are often inspired by Ranti Bam’s travels and notes on the everyday. She writes, “The title of the work Antafi is from the Greek word for Rose. My works are titled purely descriptively and abstractly, looking for words that reflect and resonate the spirit of the work in either Greek or Yoruba, both languages I am familiar with.” Like Magdalene Odundo, Bam has centered much of her life in England. Her technique reflects her training at London’s City Lit College and her interest in diverse African hand-built ceramics.
