Robert Gober

Contemporary Art

Best known since the 1980s for his sculptural works that replicate and distort quotidian objects, Robert Gober turns to lithography to play with the familiar form and layout of newspapers. In each of these individually printed sheets, he replaces the press photography with his own imagery: the topmost page, for instance, includes a self-portrait of the artist in a wedding dress, wig, and veil. This insertion underscores how the newspaper can be a deeply personal medium and replicates the experience of seeing one’s personhood—in particular, the artist’s queer identity—politicized and debated in the public sphere.
