Tea Bowl

Koie Ryoji

Asian Art

Koie Ryōji often works with the elements of the Oribe style—light-colored clay, green glaze, and brown and white decoration—but he does not employ the pictorial motifs usually found on Oribe wares, and he allows the colors to bubble and flow to a degree that would have been unacceptable to Momoyama-period Oribe artists. Koie is celebrated for his experimental methods and spontaneous, expressive forms.
