CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION Textile: printed linen (roller printed?). Design of rectangular and square reserves containing various oriental motifs --Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock portraits of a Kabuki actor and of a courtesan, an emblematic crane with spread wings, a song bird resting on a blossoming cherry branch and a pheasant on a tuft of earth - both reminiscent of traditional painting styles, a pattern of scrolling vines not unlike printed Indian textiles, a Chinese inspired scrolling cloud/dragon form, patterned birds mimicking Korean Kotyo celadon’s, among other orientally influenced patterns -- arranged grid-like upon a dark blue ground patterned with small, abstracted gold butterflies resembling knotted wire. Colors used within the reserves range from grisaille beige to white, pale blue, pinks, and dark olive. Able: gold and white, boldly patterned paper label remnant with calligraphic writing (Japanese?) adhered to the front, upper left hand corner. CONDITION - Fair. Fragment is intact but dirt and apparent watermarks give the textile a darker and grayer appearance as evidenced through the much lighter colors near the upper and left edges.
