Sketchbook, Marines and Landscapes

William Trost Richards

American Art

Occasionally, Richards used pen and ink to create remarkable little sketches. In these drawings, he modeled his delicately outlined forms with skillful hatching and cross-hatching, linear techniques for shading and modeling learned early in his career as an illustrator. This pastoral vista is probably a view of Newport or neighboring Jamestown.
