CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION
Watercolor painting of one of the polychrome murals decorating a ceremonial altar at the temple complex of Tizatlan. The painting in brown, tan, turquoise, black and beige features human skulls and shields among other Mixtec codex-style images. Tizatlan was one of several independent polities that constituted the late pre-Hispanic confederacy of Tlaxcala (1150-1521 C.E.) in central Mexico.
Condition: Poor; three major tears along width of painting; two losses along lower side; evidence of water damage and paper repairs. Puncture holes made by thumbtacks? all over work.
