CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION
Slipper Chair. Ebonized wood with gilt and polychrome decoration. Trapezoidal seat with slightly bowed front covered in yellow-brown plush secured at seat with metal tacks. Straight square profile back stiles with straight cross rail above seat and straight crest rail with exaggerated cutout key motifs at ears. Four turned vertical spindles with centered ball pierce back rail and crest and capped by flattened finials top and bottom. Front legs turned at top and rounded at bottoms that splay forward. Front stretcher between legs slightly bowed with six turned thin vertical spindles connecting to front seat rail. Various members outlined with thin gilt band and thinner red within and central thicker green band. Central balls of spindles gilt with red highlights to turnings. Top center front crest rail with stylized painted green acanthus leaf in gilt border.
Although not a pair, this chair was made by the same maker as 1990.157.1.
Photographs in file; given that this model seems to have been produced in France and probably England, the American attribution is somewhat problematic.
CONDITION - Very good original condition; loss to first back spindle proper left at top and bottom broken and glued; second back spindle proper left small loss to turnings; top finials loose; center right and left finial with small losses; crest rail separated at seams from back stiles; overall minor scratching and paint loss.
