The Fiftieth Annual Exhibition of photographs by members of the Department of Photography of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences at the Brooklyn Museum opens with a formal reception on Monday night, March 4th. Among the guests who will attend are:

An exhibition of photographs, including fifteen prize winning prints, arranged by the Department of Photography of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, will be open to the public Tuesday, March 5th, after a formal opening for invited guests Monday evening, March 4th, and will run through Sunday, March 31st. This is the Fiftieth Annual Exhibition of Members Photographs of The Institute’s Department.
The competition which closed on February 17th offered a pair each of $50 first prizes, $25 second prizes and $15 third prizes. The competition was divided into two categories, one for members of The Institute’s Department of Photography, and the other for all amateur photographers in the New York Metropolitan Area.
The jury was composed of James G. McDonald, President of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, the late Raymond V. Ingersoll, Borough President of Brooklyn, Laurance P. Roberts, Director of the Brooklyn Museum, Thomas O. Sheckell, former President of Pictorial Photographers of America and Herbert C. McKay, F.R.P.S., Technical Editor of Miniature Camera Monthly.
The prize winners are, in the Members group: Mr. Harold G. Swahn, first prize; Mr. Walter E. Owen, second prize; in the Non-Members group - Mr. Dan Klugherz, first prize; Mr. Julio Russo, second prize; in the Non-Members group - Mr. Dan Klugherz, first prize; Mr. Julio Russo, second prize; and Mr. James L. Davidson, Jr., third prize. Mr. Owen of New York City is the only non-Brooklyn winner. The jury did not see fit to award a third prize in the Members section.

The Fiftieth Annual Exhibition of Photographs by members of the Department of Photography of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, including fifteen prize-winning prints, will be open to the public Tuesday, March 5th, after a formal opening for invited guests Monday evening, March 4th, and will run through Sunday, March 31st.
The competition for pictures portraying “Brooklyn Contrasts” which closed on February 17th offered a pair each of $50 first prizes, $25 second prices and $15 third prizes. The competition was divided into two categories, one for members of The Institute and the other for all amateur photographers in the New York Metropolitan area.
The jury was composed of James G. McDonald, President of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, Mrs. Edward C. Blum, wife of the Chairman of Board of Trustees, Laurance P. Roberts, Director of the Brooklyn Museum, Thomas O. Sheckell, former President of Pictorial Photographers of America, and Herman de Wetter, Institute Instructor in Photography.
The prize winners are: in the Non-Members group – Mr. Dan Klugherz, first prize; Mr. Julio Russo, second prize; and Mr. James L. Davidson, Jr., third prize; in the Members group – Mr. Harold G. Swahn, first prize; Mr. Walter E. Owen, second prize. Mr. Owen of New York City is the only non-Brooklyn winner. The jury did not see fit to award a third prize in the Members section
A section of the Department Members exhibition is devoted to retrospective photographs by former members of the Department and former Institute Instructors of Photography. Names of contributors to this group of photographs reads like a “Who’s Who” in Photography.
Among former members whose work is exhibited are William Elbert Macnaughtan and James W. Aughiltree, former President sof the Department, the late Joseph Petrocelli, ninety of whose prints are owned by the Smithsonian Institute; the late Charles B. Denny, notable for his still lifes; Mrs. Antionette B. Hervey, former official photographer of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine; Eugene P. Henry, and. Richard M. Coit. Among other former instructors whose work is shown at this exhibition are William H. Zerbe, dean of newspaper photographers of New York, who for nearly thirty years exerted great influence on the pictorial trends of photography in the Metropolitan area through his classes at The Institute along with the late Clarence H. White, instructor at The Institute for over fourteen years.
The jury of selection of current prints was Gayle A. Foster, A.R.P.S., President of the Pictorial Photographers of America, Samuel Grierson, Secretary of the Pictorial Photographers of America, and John Hugelmayer.
An Exhibition of Work of Students in the Institute’s Art Classes will be held at the Museum during April.
