A selection of 60 photographs acquired by The Brooklyn Museum over the last four years is featured in an exhibition entitled Selected Photographs at The Brooklyn Museum. It comprises works dating from the late 19th century through the present and is installed in the Museum’s Prints and Drawings Galleries, located on the second floor. The exhibition opened June 30 and will remain on view through September 18, 1989.
Photographs on view range in style from the classic portraiture of Edward Steichen (American, 1879-1973) and Paul Strand (American, 1890-1976) to the pictorialism of Alvin Langdon Coburn (American, British born, 18.82-1966) and the social documentation of Lewis Wickes Hine (American, 1874-1940).
Highlights include Susan Wides’ (American, b. 1955) trompe l’oeil Massacre of the Moran Gang, 1987; Arthur Tress’ (American, b. 1940) narrative tableau Man with Sheep, 1974; and a rare photograph by Weegee (Arthur Fellig) (American, 1900-1968) depicting the essence and mystery of Marylin Monroe and exposing a rare aspect of the work of this popular photographer. This eclectic selection of highlights is indicative of the wide-ranging interests and collection policy of the Museum.
The exhibition has been selected and organized by Barbara Head Millstein, Associate Curator in the Museum’s American Painting and Sculpture Department.
