“DRAWING EACH OTHER”, an exhibition of drawings and watercolors by and of a group of young Brooklyn artists, will open in The Brooklyn Museum’s Community Gallery on Sunday, February 7, and will remain on view through March 7. Admission is free.
The group began about 5 years ago, when the participating artists realized that they would only be able to afford to work from a model by posing for each other. Meetings were held several times weekly, with each artist sharing the modeling chores. “We work in a variety of ways,” says Patricia Mainardi, spokesman for the group, “sometimes all together, some in smaller groups. The thing that differentiates this group from other drawing groups is the relationship of equality -- ‘You pose for me, and I'll pose for you.' "
The participating artists, who come from varied backgrounds, are: Noah Baen (Red Hook); Charlotte Bunting (Park Slope); Richard Castellan (Prospect Heights); Ellen McCall (Fort Greene); Frank McCall (Fort Greene); Joe Giordano (Brooklyn Heights); Marjorie Kramer (Red Hook); Patricia Mainardi (Prospect Heights); Irene Peslikis (Prospect Heights); Dee Slack (Brooklyn Heights); Susan Thurston (Park Slope); Norman Turner (Prospect Heights).
The Community Gallery, under the direction of Henri Ghent, is the first exhibition facility of its kind to be established within a major American museum. Since its inauguration in 1968, it has presented 25 shows, exhibiting the work of more than 1,000 artists. The exhibit “DRAWING EACH OTHER” is made possible with the support of the New York State Council on the Arts.
Also on view at The Brooklyn Museum are two outstanding Van Gogh exhibits: VAN GOGH’S SOURCES OF INSPIRATION: 100 Prints From His Personal Collection (Feb. 1-April 4) and VINCENT VAN GOGH: PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS (Feb. 14-April 4). Both exhibits will run concurrently, providing scholars and artlovers with a superb opportunity to trace the relationship between the famed Dutch artist’s sources of inspiration and the masterpieces he created.
