“Image d’Haiti,” a showing of one hundred works by 15 Haitian artists will be on exhibition in the Community Gallery of The Brooklyn Museum, Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, October 5 through October 26, 1969. The Gallery, under the direction of Henri Ghent, recently celebrated its first anniversary. It is designed to provide exposure for local professional and non-professional artists and is the first such showcase for community artists in a major museum.
The exhibition is sponsored by the Haitian Artists Association Abroad and the Haitian Community Center of Brooklyn. Lucner Lazard is President of the Association and Pierre Armand, President of the Brooklyn group.
The paintings and sculptures by Haitian artists living In New York include primitive as well as contemporary works. The sponsors of the exhibition point out that the group does not reject the primitive movement, but attempt to give it a new interpretation.
Participating artists are: André Bouchard, Spencer Depas, Julio Duverger, Louise Janvier, Rolande Janvier, Abraham Mucius, Lucner Lazard, Bernard Sejourne, Daniel Louidor, Bernard Wah, Gontran Durocher, Emmanuel Merisier, Georges Rector, Jean Guillot and Frederic Pierre.
