Names of many great, popular artists of three centuries are to be found in the Exhibition of European Prints from the collection of the Brooklyn Museum. A striking variety of subject and style is represented in the works of past and present masters of art in the provocative showing at the Brooklyn Museum, exhibited in the Museum’s second floor Print Gallery through October 31.
The Curator of the Prints and Drawings Collection at Brooklyn, Una E. Johnson, said “This Museum has long been interested in the art of printmaking. Our permanent collection of prints covers all fields and periods but has specialized in 19th and 20th Century European and American work, and was one of the first museums to do so.”
Since the beginnings of the collection there has been a noticeable increase of public interest in the art. One explanation by Miss Johnson suggests that “Fine prints are among the most accessible and democratic of all artistic creations. The fact that they are “multiple originals” makes them available to a larger public for a much smaller price than paintings or pieces of sculpture. The finest and most successful prints usually are made by artists who are also painters and sculptors.”
Among the brilliant European painters and sculptors who were also extremely successful printmakers, showing in the current exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, are Picasso, Kirchner, Matisse, Piranesi, Roualt, Bonnard, Braque and many others.
