  • March 3, 1939 A series of Traditional Italian Music, Dance and Sport Demonstrations will be presented in the Sculpture Court of the Brooklyn Museum at 3:00 P.M. on the afternoons of Saturday, March 4, Saturday, March 18, and Saturday, March 25. These programs are sponsored by the Community Folk Arts Committee and have been arranged through the cooperation of the Brooklyn Museum, The International Institute of the Y.W.C.A. and the Federal Music Project, U. S. Works Progress Adminstration.

    On March 4 the Honorable Gaetano Vecchiotti, Royal Consul General of Italy, will open the first of these programs at which the Coro D’Italia Folkioristico led by Maestro Sandro Benelli will give a program of folk songs and dances.

    On March 18 there will be a concert of Italian music presented by the Federal Music Project.

    On March 25 there will be a program of Traditional Italian Music, Dance and Sport. Those who will participate are Thomas Maranghello, Bag Piper; Mrs. Maranghello, Dancer; Miss Laura Rovere, Soprano; Frank Schillaci, Baritone; C. Candido, Tenor; accompanied by Maestro Viscardo Stefanelli.

    In connection with those programs the Brooklyn Museum will exhibit a collection of the arts and crafts of Italy including jewelry, costumes, ceramics and paintings. The exhibits will be partly from the Brooklyn Museum collections and partly from private collections.

  • March 4, 1939 The first of the series of three Italian Festival programs will be held in the Sculpture Court of the Brooklyn Museum on Saturday, March 4, at 3:00 P.M. Subsequent programs will be held on March 18 and March 25. These programs are open free to the public.

    The March 4 program will be opened with an address by the Honorable Gaetano Vecchiotti, Royal Consul General of Italy, The Coro Folkioristico d’Italia, led by Maestro Benelli, will give the following numbers: Alla Croce di Savoia (Words by Giosue Carducci, Music by Sandro Benelli), Folk Songs and Dances from Various Regions of Italy (Quando la Man Mi Premi, Song from Lombardy; Ma Come Ball Bella Birnba, Venetian Song ; Tarantella Napoletana, Neopolitan Dance; Stornelli Fiorentini, Tuscan Song; Primavera Siciliana, Sicilian Song; Ii Saltarello, Roman Dance, and La Monferrina, Piedmont Dance) and Inno a Roma (Words and music by Sandro Benelli). Maestro Sandro Benelli is the singing director, Miss Clelia Capelli, dancing director, and Miss Maria Alliegro, costume director. Excerpts from Italian Opera to be rendered by Miss Laura Rovere, soprano, Mr, Frank Schillaci, baritone, and Mr. C. Candido, tenor, will include a duet from the first act of Il Trovatore by Laura Rovere and Frank SchIllaci, a duet from Act IV of Aida by Laura Rovere and C. Candido and a tercette from Act IV of Il Trovatore by Laura Rovere, Frank Schillaci and C. Candido.

Guido, Mrs. Palmer H. Jadwin, Mrs. Henry F. Kramer, Dr. and Mrs. Charles L’Episcopo, Mrs. William H. Lohman, Mr. and Mrs. A.     This program is one of a series sponsored by the Community Folk Arts Committee and has been arranged through the cooperation of the Brooklyn Museum, the International Institute of the Y. W. C. A. and the Federal Music Project, U. S. Works Progress Administration.

    In connection with these programs the Brooklyn Museum is placing on view a small exhibition of Italian Arts and Crafts partly from private collections and partly from the Museum collection.

  • March 3, 1939 Cherished heirlooms and mementos of Italy have been lent to the Brooklyn Museum for the current exhibition of Italian Arts and Crafts, on view through March 26th, Mrs. Sandro Benelli, Frank Chiusa, Miss Jeanette Califano, Mrs. G. G. Chiarello, Mrs. Califano, Miss Candela, Mrs. Anthony Di Giovanna, Rose Galante, Mrs. Joseph Lucarelli, Mrs. Martella, Mrs. B. Montalbano, Mrs. Nicosla, Mrs, A.J. Petti, Miss Catherine A. Van Brunt, Mrs. Vicari, Miss Vicari, Mary C. Vicari and Albert Zaggerani are lenders. Several lenders are members of the Coro d’Italia Inc. In addition, the Mamma Mia Importing Company Inc. has lent a life-sized Sicilian cart. Ecclesiastical vestments given by the Rembrandt Club, rich with velvet and gold embroidery, are included in the exhibition. The Brooklyn Museum Collections have also contributed cut velvet and satin embroideries, Venetian glass candlesticks, Deruta majolica, coral jewelry, huge seal rings, cameos, religious jewelry in gold and enamel, gold jewelry, mosaics and a filigree card case.

    Among the costumes shown are a man’s suit from Sardinia lent by Albert Zaggerani, a bridegroom’s suit from Loreto lent by Frank Chiusa, a girl’s costume from Sicily lent by Mary Vicari, a girl's costume from Piedmont lent by Rose Galante, a child’s baptismal dress lent by Mrs. Ristori, a morning jacket made for a trousseau lent by Mrs. Joseph Lucarelli and a doll’s trousseau lent by Miss Jeanette Catalano.

    Jewelry and silver work have been lent by Mary C. Vicari, Mrs. B. Montalbano, Mrs. J. Spadaro, Mrs. Nicosia, Mrs. Vicari, Miss Candela and Mrs. Ristori.

    Mrs. Martella lent a child’s coverlet, Mrs. G. G. Chirello a table cloth of drawn work and venice lace, Mrs. Califano contemporary pottery from Perugia, Miss Anita Candella a sampler, Miss Van Brunt doll furniture and a miniature Sicilian cart, Mrs. Robert Ristori a model of a royal coach, Miss Vicari plaster dolls, Mrs. A. J. Petti a pair of carved castanets from Salerno and Mrs. Sandro Benelli a miniature wayside crucifix in a shrine.

    Mrs. James Guida has lent a collection of models of heels for shoes made in Perugia, including one designed especially for Mae West, and one made of skimmed milk, though it looks like crystal. One of the oddest and latest is oval in section. These models are imported for use as designs by American shoe manufacturers.
