NEW YORK, February 13 -- The Third Western States Exhibition, an assembly of 127 works by 45 artists currently working in the Western United States, will open June 6 at The Brooklyn Museum in New York. A project of the Santa Fe based Western States Arts Foundation, organized in cooperation with The Brooklyn Museum, the exhibition will remain on view through August 5.
Philip Morris Companies Inc., sponsor of the first and second Western States Exhibitions, is also the corporate sponsor of the current exhibition. Additional support for the entire exhibition series has been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. The series aims at showcasing a wide cross-section of the western region’s contemporary art and bringing to national and international attention those artists normally not recognized outside their regions.
The current exhibition is the largest and most comprehensive to date. Represented are 19 painters, 12 sculptors, 7 photographers and 7 multi-media artists (see attached complete list of artists). Artists were nominated by curators, artists and other art professionals from all 14 states. After reviewing the work of the 500 nominated artists, curator Charlotta Kotik, The Brooklyn Museum’s curator of contemporary art, traveled some 42,000 miles through 14 states to make studio visits to over 130 of the artists. They were viewed in a full range of working environments, including renovated barns, storefronts, trailer parks, garages, warehouses, old adobes, mountain cabins and under coconut palms.
The fully illustrated catalogue, also made possible by Philip Morris Companies Inc., contains an essay by curator Kotik and biographies of all participating artists.
After leaving Brooklyn, the exhibition will tour to the southern and western United States through May 1988. The scheduled exhibition sites are: New Orleans Contemporary Art Center; J.B. Speed Museum, Louisville; Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center; San Antonio Museum of Art; Yellowstone Art Center, Billings; Palm Springs Desert Museum, and San Jose Museum of Art (see attached tour dates).
The Brooklyn Museum, located at 200 Eastern Parkway, is open 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; Saturday, 11:00-6:00 p.m.; Sunday, 1:00-6:00 P.m.; holidays, 1:00-5:00 p.m. and is closed Tuesdays.
Suggested admission fee is $2.00; for students with valid identification, $1.00. Museum members, senior citizens and children under 12 years accompanied by an adult are admitted free.
The Western States Exhibition Series was launched in 1978. Western States Arts Foundation members are: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming and Washington State, an Affiliate Member. California and Texas also participate. In addition, the Foundation operates programs in the literary and performing arts, including the Western States Book Awards and the Performing Arts Tour.
