An exhibition of more than 90 works on paper that have been acquired over the past ten years will be presented at the Brooklyn Museum of Art from June 7, 1997, to September 28, 1997. Process on Paper: Recent Acquisitions— Prints, Drawings, and Photographs consists of a variety of works that represent a broad range of styles and techniques. This exhibition includes prints by Vito Acconci, Louise Bourgeois, Ernest Crichlow, Lyonel Feininger, and Jacques Villon; drawings by John Singleton Copley, John Singer Sargent, and Kiki Smith; and photographs by Vivian Cherry, Roy DeCarava, David Levinthal, and Lorna Simpson.
These works, acquired over the past ten years by the Department of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs at the Museum, demonstrate its commitment to continually strengthening the collection with a wide range of material. The extent of subject matter and technique explored by these artists allow the collection to be shown and interpreted in various ways. One main focus of this exhibition will be to educate the public about different technical processes such as lithography, etching, monotype, gelatin silver prints, and serigraphy; informative texts will be placed next to relevant works that illustrate each specific process.
Each work represents a significant addition to the collection. The show will include notable print works such as Vasily Kandinsky’s 1903 woodcut Sängerin (The Singer) and a 1994 lithograph from Elizabeth Murray titled Shack. Drawings exhibited will include a number of 19th century works by American artists such as William Trost Richards, John Singer Sargent, and Elihu Vedder. The photographs on display will include gelatin silver prints from Emmet Gowin's Danville, Virginia, series and works from Aaron Siskind’s travels in Mexico.
