Legendary, reputedly flourished circa 750, Poland
Wanda was a legendary Polish warrior-queen of the eighth century, a time when Poland was under threat from the much stronger German army. A German prince demanded her hand in marriage and Poland as a dowry, threatening war if she did not comply. Rather than surrender her country, Wanda threw herself into the Vistula River.
