Suzanne Necker
b. 1739, Crassier, Switzerland; d. 1794, Beaulieu, France
Married to Jacques Necker, the French minister of finance under Louis XVI, Suzanne Necker hosted a brilliant Parisian salon that attracted the likes of Denis Diderot, Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon, Friedrich Melchior Grimm, and Jean-François Marmontel. She established the Hôtel Necker, a hospital for poverty-stricken patients. After Necker’s death, her husband published her collected writings as Mélanges (1798 and 1801), moral musings that reveal her strong religious convictions. Her daughter was Germaine de Staël.
