Plotina
Date of birth unknown; d. C.E. 121, Rome
Plotina, also called Pompeia Plotina, was the wife of the Roman emperor Trajan (ruled 98–117) and she used her power as empress to improve the social conditions of Rome, particularly for the poor. She and Trajan adopted a son, Hadrian, and it was Plotina who ensured that he became Trajan’s heir and successor. She died in C.E. 121 and Hadrian dedicated temples to her in Rome and Nîmes.
