Penthesilia
Mythic, known in ancient Greece, beginning circa 1200 B.C.E.
Penthesilia was the daughter of Ares, god of war. She accidentally killed her sister, the Amazon queen Hippolyte, with her spear when they were deer hunting. Overcome with grief and wishing to die—honorably—she enlisted in the Trojan War on the side of the Trojans and was slain in battle by the Greek warrior-hero Achilles.
