Olive Schreiner
b. 1855, Wittebergan, Cape Colony [now in South Africa]; d. 1920, Cape Town
Olive Schreiner, South African novelist, social activist, and political leader, wrote the groundbreaking novel The Story of an African Farm (1883). In her writing and in her life, Schreiner was a revolutionary figure, vehemently opposed to colonialism in Africa, a pacifist during World War I, and a strong proponent of woman’s suffrage.
