Isis
Mythic, worshipped in ancient Egypt, circa 3150–30 B.C.E.
Isis was the Egyptian goddess of the dead and funeral rites and was often worshipped as a mother goddess. She was the daughter of Seb and Nut, wife and sister of Osiris, and mother of Horus. Her name means “Queen of the Throne” and she is often depicted with a symbolic throne on top of her head. Early images of Isis breast-feeding the infant Horus can be linked to Christian images of the Madonna and Child.
