Hannah Senesh

b. 1921, Budapest; d. 1944, Budapest

Hannah Senesh (Senesz) moved from Hungary to Palestine in 1939, where she became involved in the zionist movement for the establishment of Israel. In 1943, Senesh volunteered to parachute into Hungary and was trained by British Intelligence Services. After parachuting into Yugoslavia and crossing the border into Hungary with the aim of aiding Allied troops and Jews, she was captured, imprisoned, and executed by the Nazis. Throughout her life, Senesh wrote diary entries and poems which eloquently convey her passionate dedication to the Jewish people and the zionist cause.
