Ethelberga
Date of birth unknown; d. 647, Lyming, England
Ethelberga (Ethelburga, Aethelberga), the daughter of King Ethelbert and Queen Bertha, married King Edwin of Northumbria in 625 and converted him to Christianity. Like her parents, she advanced the spread of Christianity through England, establishing one of the first Benedictine nunneries in the country, at Lyming. After her husband’s death in 633, she retired to Lyming and served as abbess until her death in 647.
