Emily Blackwell

b. 1826, Bristol, England; d. 1910, York Cliffs, Maine

Emily Blackwell, the younger sister of Elizabeth Blackwell, earned a degree in medicine in 1854 and was co-founder and surgeon at the New York Infirmary for Women and Children (opened in 1857). She was also professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Women’s Medical College (opened in 1868). She became director of the infirmary and dean of the college in 1869 when her sister left for England. Emily was accepted as a member of the New York County Medical Society in 1871 and continued to practice medicine and teach until her retirement in 1899.
