Teacher Workshops: MLK Day of Action
Monday, January 20, 2025
9:30 am–12 pm, 1–3:30 pm
Education Center, 1st Floor
Educators: honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day by joining our annual day of action, featuring two professional development workshops. Attend one session or stay for the whole day to explore strategies for leveraging the arts to build and sustain community in the classroom and beyond.
In the morning workshop, led by artist Mei Kazama, consider the role of affirmation and admiration—toward people, histories, and ideas—in fostering joy. Visit our newly reinstalled American Art galleries and discuss how artists “give flowers” (sometimes literally) as an act of love, healing, and hope. Then, through reflective writing and drawing in the studio, create your own expressions of appreciation for your communities.
In the afternoon workshop, led by artist Makda Amdetsyon, examine the intersection of craft and communal care. Look closely at works in The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition with educator Henry Wahlenmeyer and discuss artistic processes for altering, updating, and repairing everyday objects and materials. In the studio, learn techniques for mending and adapting textiles, considering the role of repair as a form of care.
Registration is $20 for one session and $30 for the full day; lunch will be provided for full-day participants. Member registration is $13.50 per session. Not a Member? Join today!
