Artist Shaun Leonardo and company present Taxi Dance, a one-night-only performance dance party presented in conjunction with our exhibition Crossing Brooklyn: Art from Bushwick, Bed-Stuy, and Beyond. Inspired by the taxi dance hall, a popular nightclub phenomenon of the 1920s where men paid women a dime a song to dance with them (and which has had a resurgence in New York’s Latin American communities since the 1980s), Taxi Dance revises this "romantic transaction." In Leonardo’s version, taxi dancers are men, and participants (members of the public) are invited to ask them for a dance—only $2 a song.
Join us for a fun, energetic, and passionate dance party that redefines this popular phenomenon, and that might also challenge your perceptions of companionship and gender dynamics!
