Brooklyn Talks: The Sweet Flypaper of Life with Sherry Turner DeCarava
Thursday, November 8, 2018
7–9 pm
Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor
Celebrate the much-anticipated new edition of the bestselling 1955 book The Sweet Flypaper of Life, in conjunction with our special exhibition Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power. The iconic collaboration between poet Langston Hughes and photographer Roy DeCarava—whose work is included in the exhibition—captures daily life in Harlem through a poetic dialogue of images and words. Tonya Pinkins, award-winning actress, performs the voice of Sister Mary Bradley in a special reading from the book, followed by a conversation with publisher and art historian Sherry Turner DeCarava on the role of the arts within the larger culture.
