Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra: Powell Perry, León, Price
The Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra returns to our Auditorium with a dynamic program highlighting three women composers of color. The evening begins with a Suite from Zenobia Powell Perry's opera Tawawa House, which tells the story of a spa hotel in Xenia Springs, Ohio—from its role in the Underground Railroad movement and destruction by fire in 1865 to its revival and current life as part of Wilberforce University. Tania León's intricate composition for woodwinds and percussion, "Ácana," derives its inspiration from a poem by Cuban Poet Laureate Nicolás Guillén. The Fourth Symphony of Florence Price concludes the program. Heavily influenced in her early work by the orchestral music of Antonín Dvořák, her later work, as in this symphony, shows a mature and unique voice.
Program:
Zenobia Powell Perry: Suite from Tawawa House, 1985
Tania León: "Ácana," 2008
Florence Price: Symphony No. 4 in D Minor, 1945
