Artist’s Eye: José Parlá with Hank Willis Thomas

Thursday, January 19, 2023

7–9 pm

Beaux-Arts Court and Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium

José Parlá celebrates the release of his new publication Ciclos: Blooms of Mold in this edition of Artist’s Eye, the Museum’s series of intimate talks by contemporary artists who bring fresh perspectives to our special exhibitions.

Parlá is joined by his friend and fellow artist Hank Willis Thomas to discuss Parlá’s five large-scale landscape paintings featured in Brooklyn Abstraction: Four Artists, Four Walls. The series, also titled Ciclos: Blooms of Mold, explores the artist’s life, including his recovery from a near-fatal infection with COVID-19 in 2021. The two artists also ruminate on Parlá’s study of mycelium—vast formations of fungi that compose communication networks within the natural world—as well as the functions of creative communities as support systems and art-making as healing.

Tickets are $16 and include Museum general admission. Member tickets are $10. Not a Member? Join today!
