((AERO SOUND MEDITATION)) with Austin Williamson

Thursday, October 27, 2–2:30 pm and 4–4:30 pm

Great Hall, 1st Floor

SOCIAL SCULPTURE, a highlight of Virgil Abloh: “Figures of Speech,” stems from the late artist and designer’s desire to create space for Black creatives and young people. The installation offers a platform for Black cultural dialogue through lectures, poetry, performances, and workshops. In this spirit, the Brooklyn Museum has organized a three-part series with the New York–based collective BlackMass Publishing. Through its work, BlackMass grapples with the idiosyncrasies that make up the collective improvisation of African diasporic culture, combining archival photographs and found print materials with poetry and jazz.

In the first program of the series, percussionist Austin Williamson will transmit a sound meditation in honor of Virgil Abloh in SOCIAL SCULPTURE. The objective is to immerse the audience in pure sound through percussion instrumentation. Gongs, cymbals, percussion, and electronics will be harnessed as tools.

Note: The audience is asked to remain silent during the meditation.

Access is included with purchase of a ticket to Virgil Abloh: “Figures of Speech” on October 27.
