February 1, 2000
Artists Books, part of the Working in Brooklyn exhibition series, will present fifty books made in the 1990s by Brooklyn-based artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Doug Beube, and Janet Zweig. The exhibition, which opens at the Brooklyn Museum of Art on February 4, 2000, provides a rare opportunity to view unlimited and limited editions, unique books, and sculptural bookworks together. The exhibition, the BMA’s first to examine the art of the book, will close on April 16.
Book multiples, unlimited or open editions of an artist book, will be featured on a library reading table for the public to hold and enjoy. Such works include Peggy Doody’s A Very Famous Artist in a Williamsburg Studio Tour and Janet Zweig’s classic flip book Sheherezade. Limited edition works, such as Meg Belichick’s Miss Gowanus, and unique books, like Doug Beube’s Portrait of a Virus, will be on view in display cases. The exhibition will also feature collaborative works such as I know where I’m going, a velvet-bound work resembling a family album by artists Ruth Lingen and Lois Lane. Other works include Louise Bourgeois’s interpretation of Arthur Miller’s Homely Girl, A Life and Gazelle in the Donkey Stable, a work inspired by the Persian poet Rumi featuring etchings by Brooklyn artist Aleksandar Duravcevic.
In conjunction with the exhibition, two books have been published and will be available for purchase at the Museum. The first is an exhibition checklist, designed by Stacy Wakefield of Evil Twin Publications in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This book is based on a still innovative 1926 BMA catalogue, which was designed by Katharine Dreier and Constantin Alajalov. The second book, B, was created by nine students in “Art of the Book”, a course given in the Communication Design BFA Program at Pratt Institute by Professor Werner Pfeiffer. This limited edition, titled B for both Brooklyn and book, explores the borough through snapshots, samples of ethnic foods, and even soil samples from various neighborhoods.
Artists Books is made possible by a generous grant from AT&T. Deirdre Lawrence, Principal Librarian and Coordinator of Research Services at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, is the curator of this exhibition.
Additional artists books may be viewed at Pratt Institute’s Library and the Salena Gallery at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus for the duration of the Artists Books exhibition at the BMA.
In conjunction with the exhibition Artists Books, the Museum will be presenting a series of public programs. All programs are free with Museum admission.
