Hiera
Mythic, known in ancient Greece, beginning circa 1200 B.C.E.
Hiera, the wife of Telephus, mythological son of the Greek hero Herakles, commanded the Mysian women into battle during the legendary Trojan War. Hiera and her troops fought on the side of the Trojans against the invading Greek forces, and she was eventually killed in battle by a Greek soldier named Nireus. Her name means either “holy one” or “holy queen.”
